The smartphone juggernaut continues?in the U.S. According to a new Nielsen report,?49.7 percent of mobile subscribers owned smartphones as of February. That's up from 36 percent a year ago.

Two-thirds of those who got a new phone in the last three months chose a smartphone over a feature phone, the research firm says. ?

Android-based phones lead the U.S. smartphone market with a 48 percent share, while Apple's iPhone is at 32 percent, and BlackBerry is at 11.6 percent.

"Among recent acquirers who got their smartphone within the last three months, 48 percent of those surveyed in February said they chose an Android and 43 percent bought an iPhone," the research firm said. Only 5 percent opted for a BlackBerry.

Another report, from comScore earlier this month, said that Android is on nearly half the phones ?carried by the country's 101 million smartphone subscribers, while about another third use iPhones.

RIM, which makes BlackBerry, has continued to decline as a favorite among U.S. purchasers. In the summer of 2011, Nielsen pegged RIM's U.S. market share at about?20 percent.

In Nielsen's?"State of the Media: The Mobile Media" report, released in December and based on a survey of 25,000 mobile customers,?the research firm said smartphone ownership is predominant among those age 18 to 34.

Nearly two-thirds -- 64 percent -- of 25? to 34-year-olds and 53 percent of 18? to 24-year-olds own smartphones, "and they have led in smartphone penetration compared to other age groups since 2009."

A part that ended abruptly in January after a 44-year run on ABC. For anyone who's fallen in love with the heroine of a two-hour movie or reread a favorite novel for the fourth time, try to imagine the bond created by watching a show five days a week, every single week, for 20, 30 or even 40 years.

You probably thought only your 90-year-old granny still watched soap operas, right?

In 2011, 7.5 million people watched soaps in the U.S., a fraction of the glory years, but still an enviable following as network ratings decline across the board. To give you some perspective that's roughly the amount The Oprah Winfrey Show averaged in its own heyday.

Good riddance, you say. Farewell to predictable dialogue and cheesy love scenes. So long to Friday cliffhangers and histrionic daytime divas. Soap operas have had their 15 minutes of fame and should skulk away into the shadows like Vaudeville and silent film and Lindsay Lohan.

And while the most reasonable thing would be to set my DVR to something else and get on with my now dystopic TV-watching life, I find that I can't simply walk away.

Like countless other fans I took my post-traumatic-stress to Facebook, seeking out scarred viewers like myself. And I found them. Hundreds of thousands of fans swarming together online, seeking solace and preparing for battle.

You see, a war is on to bring soaps back from the dead. Fans are mobilizing to convince ABC to return the creative rights of One Life to Live and All My Children to creator Agnes Nixon so that they may live on somewhere else. I suppose it's apropos irony that the soaps themselves are now being held captive, because despite fans' pleas, despite other networks and production houses attempting to purchase the programs, for now our beloved Pine Valley and Llanview families are being held hostage, permanently.

ABC says it simply wants out of the soap business. In 2011, All My Children and One Life to Live were cancelled and General Hospital is expected to disappear later this year. Also this month, Disney (ABC's parent company) will phase out SOAPNet, the only niche cable channel for soaps. The network claims talk-shows, reality-TV, and self-help programming are the future and scripted shows a dying breed.

And while the past decade has seen soaps giving up the ghost across all major networks, One Life to Live's cancellation was for some reason different, a deal-breaker. Fans are saying, enough is enough. It's the first time a soap's cancellation has been met by not only sorrow and frustration, but downright defiance too. Fans have essentially refused to accept the network's decision, vowing to bring the show back if it takes months or even years.

Because fans argue that soaps aren't dying -- they're being murdered. ABC admits to having jumped on the reality-TV bandwagon because it's cheaper to produce, not because fans have abandoned scripted shows. And unlike ABC's primetime dramas Desperate Housewives or Revenge, its daytime dramas are rarely cross-advertised to prospective audiences. Fans also point to archaic ratings systems that don't accurately reflect contemporary viewing methods such as DVR and watching online, a much higher percentage for shows aired during the day while most viewers work.

When news of the cancellations hit last April soap fans sprang to action. Dozens of Facebook groups sprouted overnight, launching letter-writing and Twitter campaigns, barraging ABC and its sponsors with phone calls, appealing to celebrities for support, and urging fellow fans to boycott ABC's replacement shows and, for many, the network itself entirely. For some that meant switching their longtime local news station. Others gave up Dancing with the Stars after following it religiously since season one.

There are currently 100 groups with 150,000 active members, a significant number considering purportedly only five percent of fans seek out soap-related info on social media sites.

A key campaign is founding a new cable soap channel, an agnostic all-sudz station that would be a safe haven for all soaps, new and old, regardless of network affiliation. Fans have collected thousands of signatures, all willing to pay a monthly fee for the new channel.

Activists have already made good on a promise to boycott One Life to Live's replacement, The Revolution. So far the ratings speak for themselves. The Revolution is down nearly 50 percent from One Life to Live and rumored to be on the chopping block after only two months. Not surprisingly, last week Katie Couric publicly asked ABC not to debut her upcoming talk-show in General Hospital's timeslot, fearing poor lead-in ratings from The Revolution and a boycott from angry soap fans.

And since no conversation about soap operas would be complete without the obligatory surprise plot-twist, here goes: The biggest resistance isn't coming from the networks; it's coming from the public, legions of hard-core soap haters who are just as thrilled to see soaps die a swift, decisive death, as the fans are to revive them.

It's a strange phenomenon, considering fans of many genres have a proud history of rallying to save programs, from cult icon Star Trek to the ever-controversial animated hit Family Guy. And while non-fans might not care whether they succeed, you rarely find people hoping they fail or, worse yet, laughing at them for even trying.

Guess what? We fans know soap operas are cheesy. It's not some big secret. I spend half my time laughing at the show and the other half crying with the storylines. We love it because of the drama, the absurdity, and the tacky nuance that are tropes of this genre.

So like it or not, we fans will continue waging our war on two fronts: battling the dated stereotype that says "soap opera-activist" is an oxymoron and fighting to resurrect the deceased shows we still love (cheesy or not).

After all, if there's one lesson we've learned from decades of watching, when it comes to a soap opera, nothing is ever really dead.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez returned home Friday nearly three weeks after undergoing cancer surgery in Cuba, saying he is praying for life and is confident he will survive and triumph in his re-election bid.

After stepping off the plane, Chavez smiled and waved but also spoke soberly about the path ahead in his struggle against cancer. At times, his expression turned serious.

"I lift up a prayer... in this battle for life," Chavez said in a televised speech on the tarmac. "I'm going to live. We're going to live, and we're going to keep on overcoming. And in that commitment I will give everything, all the spiritual and physical strength that fits in my heart."

Then, he added: "Or rather, that doesn't fit. ... It's a force much bigger than the Caribbean."

Chavez came home as many Venezuelans are wondering about his long-term prospects and about how his health will evolve ahead of the country's Oct. 7 presidential election. Chavez has kept secret some details of his illness, such as the type of cancer, spurring speculation about how his cancer might affect the country's political landscape.

His close allies have assured Venezuelans that there is no Plan B and that Chavez is the only leader of his movement heading into the elections. Chavez was greeted by his vice president and Cabinet ministers, and soldiers standing at attention.

He stepped down the stairs from the plane hand-in-hand with his mother and one of his daughters. He walked gingerly and seemed less energetic than in previous appearances.

At times, Chavez's mother and another of his daughters seemed on the verge of tears. His mother raised a hand to his head to bless him.

Chavez, whose eyes appeared puffy, said he had prayed with his family in the morning before leaving Cuba.

"This new return comes converted into a prayer, a song, a commitment, a prayer to God," Chavez said. "A new prayer of hope in this battle that it's been up to us to fight."

Chavez vowed to win re-election and criticized his political opponents, saying they represent "the agenda of the right."

He accused opposition-aligned Venezuelan news media of trying to provoke fear and uncertainty in the country. "I call on the country to stay calm," he said.

Chavez also said the country's intelligence agencies should be "very attentive to the movements of these groups of the most extremely radical and irrational right." He didn't elaborate on his concerns.

The 57-year-old leader is seeking another six-year term in the October presidential vote. His rival, 39-year-old state governor Henrique Capriles, has criticized Chavez's handling of his cancer, saying that if he were president his health would "be a matter of public knowledge."

Before Chavez's return, his last appearance on Venezuelan television had came Monday night in a video showing him walking with two of his daughters in a garden in Havana. Chavez appeared in prerecorded video footage during his stay in Cuba, but Friday was the first time state television showed live video of him since he left for Havana on Feb. 24.

The president has said his Feb. 26 surgery in Cuba removed a tumor from the same location in the pelvic region where another tumor was removed in June.

After he was diagnosed with cancer last year, Chavez underwent an initial surgery in June that removed a tumor the size of a baseball.

He then had four rounds of chemotherapy and said tests showed no signs of any cancerous cells. But last month, he announced he was returning to Cuba for surgery to have a lesion removed.

Chavez has described the most recent tumor as measuring about 2 centimeters (0.8 inches). He has declined to identify the precise location where the tumors appeared.

He next plans to undergo radiation therapy, although it's unclear how soon that will begin.

"I feel very recovered," Chavez said at the airport. He said he had regained weight and "I'm stepping up the rhythm little by little again."

He also said that as his mentor Fidel Castro saw him off at the airport in Havana, Castro told him: "Chavez, I know you. Tell your people that you have to be disciplined. They're going to understand, and nobody should think that everything has passed already."

"No," Chavez added, "We're overcoming, but we should continue being rigorously disciplined."

Chavez invited supporters to the presidential palace on Saturday, saying he would address them.

The president sought to keep up with government business while in Cuba. Last weekend, his aides were in Havana for a televised meeting where Chavez reviewed projects ranging from subway expansion work to public housing complexes.

Chavez said he's been paying close attention to events in the country. "I haven't stopped being attentive one single day, even on the most difficult ones," he said.

As he got into a Mercedes to leave the airport, his aides crowed around and chanted: "Chavez, we love you!"

Google Flight Search now supports international destinations

Google's new flight search feature has been updated to include destinations outside of the United States, assuming you're still starting? your journey from an American airport. In a post on its "Inside Search" blog, Google says it's added support for over 600 international airports as destinations. However if you're planning a journey which begins at one of these airports, you're still out of luck for the moment -- Google Flights only works when U.S. airports are used as a starting point.

Last month Google Flights launched for mobile, meaning all these new features are supported on mobile devices, assuming you're using an Android or iOS device. There's no stand-alone app available on either platform, but if Google Flights picks up steam, we wouldn't be surprised to see one launched at some point in the future.

Are we there yet?: How to negotiate wisely without conceding too ...

Most business experts will tell you that business negotiation requires both parties to abandon emotion in favor of reaching common ground through rational processes. Writing for his blog Both Sides of the Table, entrepreneur and venture capitalist Mark Suster also recommends avoiding piecemeal negotiations.

He recounts a negotiation he engaged in with his business partner, former lawyer Stuart Lander. When Suster insisted on line-by-line negotiations, Lander urged him to change his strategy.

"Let's be very flexible on the issues that are at the bottom of our rank and they might really care about. Let's dig in our heels on the issues we care most about," Lander told Suster. "We can trade compromises on issues that aren't as important to us in exchange for not budging at all on our most important points. If you negotiate piecemeal, you end up compromising on everything. That's not very smart."

According to Suster, soliciting feedback on entire platforms is more effective than negotiating individual points. He reasons that this is because you may lose your leverage on issues that you truly care about that happen to be discussed later on in the negotiation process, after both you and the other party have budged from other demands.

Negotiating with all issues on the table also happens to be more efficient. If all comments are exchanged off the top, both parties may begin to see overarching themes regarding the other entity's demands, so broad, sweeping changes may erase many disagreements and allow negotiations to become more focused on addressing those key issues.

As Suster says, effective negotiating is a skill that requires years to develop through real-world exchanges, and even then, the most battle-tested executives may still commit board room gaffes once in a while. A company whose CEO has refined his or her ability to negotiate may find itself on the winning side of these exchanges more often. Therefore, an executive search firm may be sought to conduct a CEO search to find these types of leaders.

Rick Santorum On 'Mike Huckabee Show': 'Snob' Comment Was A Mistake

Appearing on "The Mike Huckabee Show" with his wife on Saturday, Rick Santorum said that he wished he had not called President Obama a "snob" for wanting everybody in America to go to college.

Huckabee brought up the remark in asking Santorum if he regretted anything he has said on the campaign trail during his run for the GOP nomination.

"Look, having been a candidate, we all go out there on the campaign trail, we say some things we wish we hadn't said, or we wish we'd said 'em a little differently," Huckabee said. "Is there anything out there that you would love to walk back and say, 'Well, let me do that a little differently'"?

Santorum replied: "Well, my wife, after she heard that comment, she said, 'Rick,' she said, 'His comment might have been snobbish, but that doesn't make him a snob.'"

Sometimes you say things you wish you had said a little differently, and that's certainly one of them," he continued.

Huckabee then praised the role of "the wives" on the campaign trail, who tell candidates "things nobody else will." He asked Karen Santorum to give an example of helpful advice she had given her husband.

"So much of it is just, you know, 'Be yourself, be sincere, speak from your heart -- and Rick is a very passionate man," she said. "And I love that in Rick -- very passionate. But sometimes people misinterpret that as sort of being mean. So sometimes I ask him to tone it down a little bit, and keep the balance between your passion and getting a little too fiery."

Mike Huckabee also addressed Santorum's fraught relationship with women. He said that, since the former Pennsylvania senator had married a woman with a law degree and nursing degree who has homeschooled seven children, "the last thing on earth that would ever be legitimately said about you is that you fear strong women." Karen Santorum concurred, calling Rick a "loving, passionate, devoted husband and father."

Santorum is coming off the heels of a resounding win in Saturday's Kansas caucus, which will net him most of the state's 40 delegates. Also on Saturday, Santorum fell to Mitt Romney in Wyoming's caucus.

Woman gives birth to son weighing nearly 14 pounds

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? A Southern California woman says doctors predicted she would give birth to a big baby boy, but nobody was prepared for just how big.

Jayden Sigler weighed in at 13 pounds, 14 ounces, when the healthy boy was delivered Thursday by cesarean section, the North County Times reported Saturday (http://bit.ly/Amd2Wv ).

His mother, Cynthia Sigler of Vista, said that her immediate reaction was: "How'd he fit?"

Doctors initially estimated that Jayden would weigh about 9 pounds, but that number jumped to 11 by early March, the mother told the newspaper.

Dr. Jerald White, who delivered the baby at Tri-City Medical Center, said Jayden was the biggest of the 20,000 newborns he has helped usher into the world since he started in 1961.

The doctor said delivering a very large baby via cesarean section is more challenging, but "it wasn't so difficult that it created a problem for anybody."

Sigler said her own family didn't believe her at first ? she convinced her cousin it wasn't a joke only after showing a photo of the scale readout.

Jayden's birth weight is almost twice that of his sister, Jailyn, now 2?. She was 7 pounds, 2 ounces at birth.

Sigler said she'll have to exchange all the baby clothes she bought for larger sizes.

A hospital official was unable to immediately determine Friday whether Jayden was the largest baby ever delivered there. It was also not clear where the newborn ranks among the largest babies also born in San Diego County.
