Skin infections in cancer patients receiving EGFRI | Health & Fitness ...

Patients who experience dermatologic toxic effects of inhibitors of epidermal growth factor receptor have a high prevalence of infections of the skin and nails, a new study published online Dec. 9 in the Journal of the National Institute of Cancer. To examine this issue, Mario E. Lacouture, MD, Department of Dermatology at Northwestern University in Chicago and colleagues collected data on 221 patients who were treated in a dermatology clinic of reference for the toxic effects of EGFRIs. They examined associations between patient characteristics and the development of these infections.

The authors write that ?in addition to processing characteristics of dermatological toxicity, special attention should be paid to the prevention or treatment of complicated infections, with the objective of maintaining the quality of life and health of the skin, both of which are essential for optimizing therapy EGFRI cancer patients. ?

The report compares the performance of the U.S.

health care system with those of Australia, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
